Focus group results consistent with Build it Right's position
In early 2004 and early 2005, HRM conducted several focus group studies regarding the new MCRC. Here are some the highlights:
Mainland Common Recreation Committee Development Strategy
Workshop Results, January 28th & February 4th , 2004
A long term vision for the facility was broken down into several categories:
- 50 metre pool.
- A field house including squash and racketball courts, walking and running track, tennis courts, etc.
- Skateboard park
- Day care facility
- Large multipurpose rooms.
- Physio clinic
- Tim Horton's
- Pub
- Restaurant
- Wellness centre.
- Skating rinks
- The ability to host water programs such as swim competitions, leisure swims, aquasize, and waterpolo.
- The ability to host dry-land programs such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, lacrosse, soccer, track and field.
- The ability to host ice programs such as open skates, hockey, and speed skating.
- The ability to host other recreational programs such as bingo, Scouts and Guides, youth leadership classes, dance classes, music classes, and theatre classes.
The results then went on to list Critical Success Criteria : a 50 meter pool, a wading pool, family changing rooms, spectator seating, multi purpose rooms, field house, soccer, lacrosse, meeting and program rooms, indoor track, fitness facility, day care facility, ice rink, pre school activity rooms, walking trails outside, bus service, storage, administrative offices, and food service.
Youth Consultation Focus Group, April 25 th 2005
At the focus group 11 youths were asked: "What activities and types of features would attract you to the new facility?" The following are some of their answers.
- Roller Disco Park
- Basketball courts
- Skateboarding Park
- Swimming pool
- Gym with exercise equipment
- Indoor Rock Climbing
- Rope Course / Zip Line
- Volleyball
- Inside Running Track
- Soccer
Seniors Consultation Focus Group, May 25 th 2005
At this focus group meeting seniors were asked: " What features would you like to see designed in the new facility that would make it more welcoming to seniors?" The following are some of their answers.
- A 25 meter pool.
- Hot tub.
- Social area.
- Golf nets
- Walking track (marked in ¼ mile)
- Seniors centre, a place to meet
- Pool table
- Theater and meeting room
- Rental space
- Ball room dancing
