Northcliffe Study

When this happened:
1997

The Northcliffe Community Centre was built by the Rockingham YMCA as an outdoor pool in the 1970’s. It was purchased by the City of Halifax in 1980. The pool was enclosed and dry activity spaces were added in 1983. No major improvements were made to the facility after the 1983 additions.

In 1997 a study of the condition of the Northcliffe facility determined that it was in need of a major renovation and that the building was nearing the end of it’s life expectancy. Before committing to a costly renovation of the Northcliffe facility, it was concluded that a Needs Assessment should be conducted in the area of HRM that was under-serviced in terms of recreation infrastructure and undergoing the fastest rate of growth in the municipality.

In 1997 the Halifax Region Municipality commissioned a Major Recreation Facility Study to determine the need for and optimum siting of a major recreation complex to serve Districts 2, 16, 21, 22 and 23 in the HRM.
