Petition Campaign

When this happened:
2005

Over 7,000 signatures in just 3 weekends

The Build it Right group began a petition in November 2005 aimed at soliciting support for a broader vision than the options A, B and C presented at HRM's Oct 19/05 public meeting.

The petition was headed up by Kelly Atkins, a member of the Build it Right steering committee, and stated the following:

WE SUPPORT a broader vision for a community recreation and active living facility located in the Mainland Common and DO NOT SUPPORT the options currently proposed by HRM which are insufficient to meet the growing needs of the community of 200,000 people in the catchment area.

WE BELIEVE that HRM should stop the current process and BUILD IT RIGHT .

Atkins organized a petition "blitz" over three weekends in November at 4 Sobeys locations (Halifax Shopping Centre Annex, Clayton Park, Bedford and Tantallon) Shopper's Drug Mart in Clayton Park and outside the Kesham Goodman library. In addition, petitions were circulated throughout Halifax West by eager Build it Right volunteers who were instrumental in informing residents about the Mainland Common Recreation Centre. Petition volunteers also handed out information sheets to those who signed.

Petition signatures were collected by many individuals throughout the Mainland North Catchment area. Complementing the in person blitz was an on-line petition that was set up on the Build it Right website.

The response was overwhelming, over 7000 signatures have been collected to date.
