With a population of 372,858 according to the 2006 Census, Halifax is the 13th largest city. The electoral district of Halifax West (Clayton Park, Fairview, Rockingham, Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea, etc) had a population of 88,756 and was the fastest growing district in Atlantic Canada according to the 2006 Census. Recreation facilities in Halifax West pale in comparison to many other similar sized or smaller cities. Below is a list of some new multi-dimensional facilities being built across Canada.
Kelowna, BC
2006 Population: 162,276
The Mission Recreation Park Aquatic Centre being built in Kelowna, BC will be a 8,920 square metre (96,000 sq ft), state-of-the-art aquatic facility with an Olympic-size 50 metre eight lane swimming pool, a wave pool, two hot tubs, a children’s play area, a fitness centre and the largest indoor civic water park in Canada, including a river run, a Flowrider and multiple slides.
Saskatoon, SK
2006 Population: 233,923
When finished the Shaw Centre in Saskatoon will include a two-floor weight/fitness room, two shared gymnasiums, child-minding, an aquatic centre with a 10-lane high performance competitive pool, six-lane warm-up pool, leisure pool with water slide and water toys, spectator seating, 3 lane walking/jogging track, cafeteria, multipurpose meeting room and a corridor connecting the Centre to adjacent schools.

Fort McMurray, AB
2006 Population: 64,441
After redevelopment is complete, the new MacDonald Island Park facility in the Fort McMurray area will include an * aquatics facility including a 54 meter-10 lane pool, a 25 meter-4 lane pool and leisure aquatics, an NHL-sized arena, public library, 2 field houses, 240 meter running track, climbing wall, fitness facility, children’s playground,and child minding area.
Lunenburg County, NS
Roughly $20-million in funding is in place to build a $30.5 million facility.
