2007 Canada Winter Games Economic Impact Assessment
On April 22, 2008 the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance released a report on the economic impact of the 2007 Canada Winter Games which were held in Whitehorse, Yukon from February 23rd to March 10th.
The report confirmed the games contributed an estimated $75.2 million to the GDP and generated $176.7 million in economic activity throughout the Yukon.
The reported economic impact is an indication of what hosts of major sporting events can expect when government invests in sport and recreation infrastructure.
The Build it Right group, a citizen action group who is lobbying for a multi-dimensional recreation facility to be built at the Mainland Common, believes Halifax would benefit economically if plans for the Mainland Common Recreation Centre were expanded.
A field house will be built as part of the games facilities. Since being announced as the host city of the 2011 Canada Winter Games on February 2, 2007, HRM has not revealed any details to the public what type of facility will be built.
