Province to spend $10 million on $30.5 million Bridgewater Recreation Centre

May 6th, 2008
Funding for Halifax Mainland Common looks substandard in comparison

Premier MacDonald announced $10 million this morning to help build a new recreation complex for Lunenburg County.

The investment of $10 million is larger than the province's financial commitment to help build the Mainland Common Recreation Centre. It is also the single largest financial contribution to a recreation facility since the Metro Centre was built in Halifax and Centre 200 was built in Sydney.

The society who is in charge of building the facility will be approaching the federal government for a contribution of $10.5 million to complete the $30.5 million in funding needed to start building.

HRM's current plans for the Mainland Common Recreation Centre includes the construction of a field house for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Since being announced as the host city of the 2011 Canada Winter Games in 2007, HRM has not revealed any details to the public on what other features the facility will have.
