Write a letter campaign
Friends of the Mainland North Common Recreation Centre,
To follow up on the Rally and recent media coverage, an e-mail blitz to the Mayor, the Councillors, MLAs and MPs calling for a Town Hall meeting is critical.
Public opinion affects elected representative decision makers.
Lend your voice calling for a Town Hall meeting by either constructing your own letter to all our elected representative or modifying the model below.
This is our chance to make a difference in our community. Everyone's support and assistance is needed.
Model letter:
Dear Mayor Kelly and HRM Councillors,
The land has been cleared for the Mainland Common North Recreation and Aquatic Centre, yet we, the Western Region citizens of HRM, have not been told what is to be built. There hasn't been a public meeting about the Recreation Centre since December 2005.
It is rumoured that the planned Mainland North Common Recreation facility will be undersized and unable to meet the ever-growing population, health, fitness and programming needs, present or future, of the Western and HRM Community.
The Canada Winter Games presents an excellent opportunity and additional funds to create a major fitness, sport, rink and aquatic facility to serve not only HRM but the entire province -- a flagship facility to be proud of, that will meet current and future programming and recreation demands.
I urge you to schedule an open Town Hall meeting in early June, to not only to inform us, but to allow the entire community to become involved before major decisions are made at the Council level. Allow us to be as eagerly involved, from the ground level up, as are the Cape Breton and Lunenberg communities.
Secrecy breeds only fear and distrust, while information and accountability leads to understanding.
Looking forward to your response and a prompt Town Hall meeting,
