Regarding the reply from tibirs, this person didn't call all of the local swim clubs! Try calling Northcliffe pool about swim lessons in that area or check out the pool and how crowded it is. That is the only pool in the area that provides an indoor pool for all of Clayton Park, Rockingham, Timberlea, etc. and it's falling apart. A lot of parents also don't start signing up their kids for swim lessons until last minute, at which time the classes do tend to fill up. The East coast is not able to host national swim meets because the facilities don't meet the codes required which means the hundreds of swimmers within the four provinces out here must travel and with swim fees well into the thousands of dollars per year, the families are not able to afford to send their kids to these events.

They do need a new 50m pool and one that can actually host National level meets but they need one on Dartmouth. There are already 2, 50m pools in Halifax. Dartmouth swimmers have to go to Halifax to train (well until they are nataionally ranked and like other sports in the maritimes, they have to move west or to the states to get any decent training facilities)
City shouldn't run it either, parks and rec. waste tax payers money. Get a separate board to run it (similar to Sportsplex and it should do well)

Interesting reading the note about swim teams not being able to get regular pool time and waiting lists. That seemed a little odd too me so I called the local clubs.(HTA, DCS, SWAT) All had lots of openings and consistent pool time. I also called HRM rec about swim lesson for September. Again lots of openings.
Kind of makes you wonder if the contributors to this forum are doing their homework.
Has far as embarrassment to the county is concerned... I don't think anyone in the rest of Canada really cares if HRM has 2 - 50m pools or 3 - 50m pools.

Regarding the article about the new Mainland pool facility in the newspaper 08 Aug 2008, the city still hasn't gotten it in their heads that a 50 metre pool with a 25 metre warm-up, cool down pool is required. The present facilities are at maximum capacity and don't meet requirements for national and international swim meets. There are waiting lists for children to join swim teams, take swimming lessons (a necessary skill) and the existing swim teams aren't even able to secure pool time on a regular basis due to syncro and diving competitions. The whole of Clayton Park, Timberlea, Beechville and other outlying areas has absolutely nothing regarding aquatic facilities and a 25 metre pool just isn't going to cut it. If the city builds only a 25 metre pool, Halifax will be, YET AGAIN an embarrassment to the country. As a CFA (come from away), I've never seen such narrow minded, backwards planning when it comes to the future of a major city.

How about this? I haven't seen any mention of this facility being barrier free. Maybe I didn't see it.
Will it be built to meaningful standards?...not just our terrible building code! That would mean a facility accessible to athletes, not just spectators. Locker rooms, showers, pool, track, weight rooms, trainer rooms all accessible. A world-class center for paralympic training......
Any ideas on this issue?

Are we simply looking for information, or an outlet to complain that it's not going to be built by the way this committee wants it built? I get the feeling that this committee is becoming like a small child who is just not getting it's way. I feel that you now have your own agenda separate from the majority. It is as if this organization feels that it should be in charge of the whole thing. I think that we have to now try to work to help our elected officials, not fight against them. Maybe then they wouldn't feel as though they couldn't inform the public of what was being constructed.
I agree that we should be informed about what will be built, but it does not need to be turned into a battleground all over again. Let's keep our eyes on the ball!

It is hard to "get something done" when you have no idea what the something is. Yes we NEED to see the plans. Yes we NEED a public meeting. Yes we NEED a 50m pool. If our elected officials won't let us see what is in store for us than we shall use whatever means required to get our voices heard.
People that make comments such as yours and then don't have the backbone to put your name on them should be ashamed.

The current facility plans in the menu are what were presented in December 2005. Since then Halifax dropped out of the Commonwealth Games but won the 2011 Canada Games and the facility has gone from $8 million to $40.
A public meeting should be held to tell people what is now included in the new plans.

Do the taxpayers not have the right to see what their money is being spent on before the project is begun? Of course we do! The area that the Mainland Common will serve has grown exponentially over the last decade and a new rec. centre is badly needed. If they are going to build it, they should "built it right".

Done properly???
That's not what build-it right wants.
They want it done their ways.
Paul get your info straight... HRM has a plan on the table... build-it right doesn't like it.
So, as little kids they are going to pout and act out until HRM gives them what they want.

haha, You cannot blame anyone for wanting to make sure something is done properly. It's hard to have blind trust when it comes to government.
There ARE situations where giving out all the information isn't a good idea but this isn't a top secret classified project. So let us in on it! Stop hording all the info people!

Just do it Right.
Hold the meeting as per the requirements of the MGA and Council rules. Advertise, give notice, and follow proper procedure? This council and in particular, senior management team, do what they want, when they want, regardless of the rules and requirements.
This is our, my, your, the citizens demoracy, 'Just do it right'.
At least then, the public voice will be heard! ( And Documented) If you wait, for this morally corrupt council and senior management team, to do what is proper, legal or morally correct, you be waiting a long, long, long time! Wake up, before it too late, and take charge of our rigths! Just do it, Right!

After visiting Moncton or Charlottetown sports facilities it is embarrassing to be hosting in Halifax. It is time the city had a quality, state of the art recreation center we can be proud of and will accommodate our needs not just today but for years to come. We are the largest center and population east of Montreal so let us be progressive and leaders for this region. Our active and non-active children and adults living here need it. Please

The government loves to offer information that sounds good until you read the fine print. This could be a 20 year plan with phase 1 being a little pool and the field house.

They screwed up the baseball diamond on the Mainland Common, so obviously they need someone to watch over them and make sure they don't screw this up too!

Surely, if a rural town like Bridgewater can build a $30 million dolalr facility, HRM can build this for Mainland Common.
People THERE were consulted about the design of their facility -- surely our Clayton Park councillors can do better.
Peter MacKay should come up with some money asap and they should just GET IT DONE.
The last public meeting was THREE years ago. There is no way they should be discussing a new ice surface from Cole Harbour when we haven't had our pool built yet, and Bedford has been promised a pool since the Hamm Tories came to office.

HRM plans to spend $40-million on this facility with or without a 50m pool. It's a big improvement from the $5-million they wanted to spend back in 2005 but unfortunately they won't tell anyone what they plan on building.
