Disregard for Community Needs
By ROXANNE BÉLAND
HRM’s lack of responsiveness to community recreation needs is breathtaking.
Stop telling us that “we don’t need it” when we clearly do.
We need our representatives to actually represent us, not disregard our demonstrable need for a large Mainland Common multi-use recreational facility.
To meet only the present needs of the 180,000+ Western HRM population, at least 2 ice surfaces, dryland gyms, a walking track, activity and community meeting rooms, teen and senior centres, daycare and a decent 50 metre pool are needed.
If funding is problematic tell us that. Why build a tiny facility that is less than useful?
Show us a plan that will meet our present and future needs, as per HRM’s 20 year mandate. Put a roof on Northcliffe to tide us over and let’s start raising the funds. Applying for “green” grants and Including the business community in this facility will make operational costs doable. Include the Health community and it will become a ‘magnet facility’.
Let’s do it together.
