Why No Rinks?

March 25th, 2008
Letter to the Editor [submitted to the Chronicle Herald]

Why does the Mainland Common Recreation Facility Plan not include rinks?

The pressing need for rinks is obvious. Coaches can form teams yet find no rink time. For those who can, one hour of practice a week is not enough to learn the skills, let alone play as a team for games. Children practicing hockey at the crack of dawn, playing late night games and travelling hours to get rink time, cannot be healthy. And that’s just hockey.

With the high demand for ice time from hockey to ringette, figure skating, speed skating, curling, synchro skating, instructional, family, senior and leisure skating, even an aggregation of 4 rinks with one power house would be self-supporting.

We need rinks included in the master plan of Mainland Common.
