The Build-It-Right Community Action group (BIR) supports our local councillors, Mary Wile and Debbie Hum, and their HRM bid team in the quest for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
Should the Canada Games come to HRM, rather than Truro or Antigonish, the HRM Mainland Common would be beneficiaries of a full-sized fieldhouse comparable to Dalplex, and an on-going financial legacy which accompanies Canada Games facilities.
This full sized fieldhouse, initially required for the 3,000 Winter Canada Games athletes, families and spectators, would be easily sustained by the demonstrated recreational needs and population growth of the HRM Western Region. Health, fitness and sports interests alike would be well served. This could also become a cornerstone for the 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.
BIR applauds HRM’s foresight in awaiting the Canada Winter Games announcement (Feb 14-16, 2007) before moving ahead with their current Mainland Common plans. Similarly, BIR continues to encourage HRM to withstand the pressure to begin the proposed Mainland Common recreation facility until the Commonwealth Games announcement in November 2007.
