New Petition at www.build-it-right.ca

Sign our NEW petition in support of a 50m pool and arenas

Sign our new petition!

The Build it Right group first launched a very successful petition campaign in 2005 where we collected over 7,000 signatures in support of a broader vision for the Mainland Common.

The 2005 petition helped us successfully campaign HRM to join to build an expanded recreation centre. The evidence: on August 5, 2008, HRM changed their plans from building an $8-million facility to building $40-million expanded recreation centre at the Mainland Common.

Open House/Public Rally Reminder

Join us on Wednesday, August 20, 4:30 pm to rally in support of a 50m pool, arenas and a public meeting
August 19th, 2008
Citizens of Halifax West marched on May 24, 2008 to demand a public meeting.

Funding for the construction of the Mainland Common Recreation Centre was announced on August 6, 2008. HRM Regional Council gave final approval on August 12, 2008 to start construction.

While we are delighted the announced facility will meet several of community's desired components (outlined in the Build it Right vision), the facility will not include a 50-metre pool or arenas.

To date, HRM has declined holding a public meeting to share their plans for the new recreation centre with the community. Last week, HRM announced it will be holding an Open House on Wednesday August 20th, from 3pm - 8pm at the Keshen Goodman Public Library (330 Lacewood Drive).

Please join us on Wednesday, August 20, at 4:30 pm to rally on the site of the Mainland Common in support for HRM:

  • to include a 50-metre pool and arenas in the facility plans; and
  • to hold a public meeting to share the facility plans with the community.
